SAN ANTONIO – Putting a series of big swing changes to the ultimate test Sunday, Justin Leonard won the Texas Open for the third time, beating Jesper Parnevik with a 10-foot birdie putt on the third hole of a playoff.
“There’s no better way to validate (the changes) than to come out and win a golf tournament like this,” Leonard said.
Leonard closed with a 5-under- par 65 to match Parnevik (69) at 19-under 261. Leonard is the first three-time Texas Open winner since Arnold Palmer in 1960-62.
“That’s pretty special,” Leonard said. “It’s great company to be in.”
Pettersen finished with a 1-over 73 to match Ochoa (71) at 277.
Two runners die. One runner died, at least 49 were hospitalized and thousands were denied the chance to cross the finish line in the Chicago Marathon.
The 88-degree heat and sweltering humidity forced organizers to shut down the second half of the course 31/2 hours after the start. Kenya’s Patrick Ivuti and Ethiopia’s Berhane Adere won the men’s and women’s titles, respectively.
An autopsy is scheduled for today for Chad Schieber, 35, of Midland, Mich. He collapsed while running on the South Side and was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m.
There also was a running death in Arlington, Va. An unidentified male runner from Virginia died during the Army Ten-Miler, collapsing near the finish at the Pentagon. The race started in 70-degree heat and high humidity.
