RIDGWAY, Colo.—An off-duty Colorado State Patrol trooper died Sunday after his motorcycle and a deer collided on U.S. 550.

Mark Dold, 49, of Durango, was northbound when a deer herd crossed the road around 10:25 a.m., the State Patrol said. Dold tried not to hit the deer but lost control of his motorcycle when it collided with one of the animals, troopers said.

The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and down an embankment. Dold died instantly when he was thrown from the motorcycle into a fence post, the State Patrol said.

He was wearing a helmet.

Survivors include his parents, wife, two sons and a daughter.
