Washington Park and the Denver Skatepark have been named 2008 10BEST BET award winners by 10BEST Inc., a highly used Internet service that provides destination information on more than 450 cities worldwide.

Washington Park was named one of 10 “Reasons to Return” to Denver.

The Denver Skatepark was named one of the 10 MP3 Placelists in the city — places to go for listening to music.

“The people of Denver have known for years of the unique beauty and appeal of Washington Park, and we are excited that now, the rest of the country will know about it,” said Kim Bailey, manager of Denver Parks and Recreation. “It is also fitting for such a progressive award to be given to our skatepark.”

10BEST BET listed as the other nine reasons to return to metro Denver:

  •  Charlie Brown’s Bar and Grill, 980 Grant St.;
  •  Emmanuel Art Gallery, 900 Auraria Parkway; Highlands Square, 32nd and Lowell Street;

  •  St. Mark’s Coffee House, 2019 E. 17th Ave.;
  •  The Loft Denver, 821 22nd St.;
  •  and the Town of Nederland.

    10BEST BET listed as the other nine Mp3 Placelists:

  •  Cheesman Park;
  •  the Colorado State Capitol Building;
  •  Evergreen Lake;
  •  High Line Canal;
  •  My Brother’s Bar, 2376 15th St.;
  •  Paris on the Platte, 1553 Platte St.;
  •  Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater;
  •  RTD’s No. 15 bus;
  •  and Ruby Hill Park.

    The $2.9 million Skate Park is the largest outdoor free public skate facility in the United States, according to Denver Parks and Recreation.

    Located in the South Platte River District, the park features an assortment of concrete bowls ranging from four to 12 feet deep.

    Two of the park’s more unique features are the Fish Ladder, a chain of shallow bowls ranging from one foot to four feet deep, and the Washboard, which connects the “street plaza” with the bowls and half-pipes, allowing skaters to maintain their speed while moving throughout the park without having to push.

    Washington Park, which Parks and Recreation says is considered one of Denver’s most beautiful parks, offers 165 acres of trails, flower beds and meandering paths which lead visitors throughout the park.

    City officials said there are 54 flower beds in the park, with one of the most distinct being an exact replica of Martha Washington’s garden at Mt. Vernon, Va., constructed in 1926.
