GREELEY – The Weld County district attorney has cleared the Windsor police chief in the fatal shooting of a suspect who wounded an officer.

District Attorney Kenneth Buck said Tuesday that Chief John Michaels was justified in shooting Edward Cavaliere on September 29th.

Buck says Cavaliere shot police Corporal Gerald Beers when Beers and another officer went to Cavaliere’s house to ask about allegations he had stolen $25 worth of candy from a Safeway store.

Michaels rushed to the scene when he learned Beers had been shot. Buck says Cavaliere pointed a gun at Michaels, who fired two rounds at Cavaliere.

Beers was hit several times in the torso and leg but survived. Some of the shots hit his protective vest.
