PROVO, UTAH — When Colorado State couldn’t crack the end zone after three drives inside the 10 in the first half, third-team running back Michael Myers finally showed the way with a 3-yard scoring run in the final quarter.
“I told the coaches we should have put him in three games ago,” CSU coach Sonny Lubick said.
That’s nothing. Myers reminds the coaches daily.
“I’ve been hungry to actually be in the game and play for two years. The hunger is only growing,” Myers said. “I tell (offensive coordinator Dan Hammerschmidt) every day at practice all I need is one series. I’ll do some positive things with it.”
Myers scored with less than a minute left two weeks ago in the Rams’ only win this season against UNLV. That score wasn’t necessary. This one was.
“I knew as soon as we got inside the red zone we were going to get the ball in there,” Myers said.
He adds to a crowded mix. Starter Gartrell Johnson averaged 3.8 yards a carry for 72 yards. Backup Kyle Bell only saw five carries for 28 yards. With his six attempts, Myers had the best per-carry average at 6.2 yards.
QB heat: CSU quarterback Caleb Hanie had a solid outing, and it wasn’t just because he was afraid the coaches would pull him for backup Billy Farris.
Although Lubick had said early in the week Farris would continue to play, he popped his throwing elbow in practice Thursday. Hanie went the distance Saturday.
Special guest: Former BYU coach LaVell Edwards was a guest in the CSU pregame locker room. BYU’s stadium is named for the icon, who retired after 2000.
“It was nice visiting with LaVell,” Lubick said of his old friend. “He told me if you stay around long enough (a season like CSU’s 1-8 record) will happen. I’m not accepting that thing. I’m not quitting. No one is giving up.”
