A Denver bankruptcy court heard CU Buffs head football coach Deion Sanders’ deposition Tuesday afternoon that could determine whether his son, Shilo Sanders, can erase more than $11 million in debt.
Judge Michael E. Romero heard the deposition on Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver. In the trial, which will run through Friday, Romero will determine whether Shilo Sanders acted willfully and maliciously during a Sept. 17, 2015, incident involving Dallas school security guard John Darjean, where Darjean claimed the then 15-year-old Shilo Sanders assaulted him and caused permanent injuries.
Darjean called Deion Sanders on his cell phone earlier that day, according to Deion Sanders’ deposition. Darjean called him because he was dealing with a situation with his son, Deion Sanders said, but Darjean didn’t provide specific details.
“My exact words were to handle it like you’d handle anybody else,” Deion Sanders said in his deposition, taken in 2018.
Darjean sued Shilo Sanders and won an $11.89 million default judgment in Texas in 2022 when the former University of Colorado football player neglected to show up in court. Shilo Sanders filed for bankruptcy in 2023 and now hopes to discharge, or erase, the more than $11 million in debt owed to Darjean. Romero will determine whether Shilo Sanders acted willfully and maliciously, because under U.S. bankruptcy law, debts resulting from a “willful and malicious injury” cannot be discharged by filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Deion Sanders virtually at 1:30 p.m. MDT Friday in case his testimony is needed in his son’s trial. His possible virtual court appearance is scheduled the day after the Buffs’ season opener at Georgia Tech on Thursday.
