The search for a director for the Colorado Division of Wildlife has been narrowed to three candidates: Kevin Delaney, Tom Remington and Steve Torbit.

Delaney retired as director of sport fishing for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in 2000 following a 25-year career in which he also worked as a fisheries biologist and regional supervisor.

Remington is head of DOW’s terrestrial section, a position from which he directs the management of Colorado’s birds and animals.

Torbit is regional director of the National Wildlife Federation covering Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. He earlier worked as a DOW researcher.

The trio were interviewed Friday by the Colorado Wildlife Commission. A final choice is expected in a matter of days.

Wildlife easement. A conservation easement has been obtained on the 2,000-acre Lunney Mountain Ranch north of Meeker, an arrangement that will keep property owned by the Harvey family free from development in perpetuity. More than 500 elk and 100 mule deer make a winter home on the ranch, which also is a valuable habitat for sharp-tailed grouse and sage grouse. It also holds bear, lion, trout and numerous smaller animals.

The easement was purchased by the Division of Wildlife with funding, in part, by Great Outdoors Colorado. It will be held by the Yampa Valley Land Trust.
