Just as true champagne originates in the province of Champagne, France, only merino sheep can produce genuine merino wool.

After introducing the world to this champagne of sheep with its New Zealand-bred brand of merino in 1994, Icebreaker established itself last year as the No. 2 seller of technical base layers in the world (behind Patagonia, which introduced merino to its line this winter). Now Icebreaker hopes to find similar success in socks.

With warm, super-soft merino on the inside, a hint of nylon and Lycra to provide stretch, shape and retention, Icebreaker’s over-the-calf ski socks feature high-density cushioning at impact points, seamless construction and strategic breathe zones for all-day comfort on the slopes, even when damp. Low bulk enhances the fit, backed up by a 30-day “comfort guarantee.” With densities ranging from Ultralite (MSRP: $16.99) to Lite ($19.99) and Midweight ($20.99), the best part is that you won’t smell like a barn animal when you take your boots off at the lodge.

Find ’em: On the Web, . The socks should be available at most specialty ski shops this winter.
