A middle-school student in Highlands Ranch was injured today in a fall or jump from a second-story level into a commons area.

The boy, 14, a student at Rocky Heights Middle School, was taken by ambulance to Littleton Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening, said Doug Ireland, a Littleton Fire Department spokesman.

Officials are still trying to piece together what happened, and it’s unclear whether the boy fell or jumped, said Whei Wong, a spokeswoman with the Douglas County School District.

The incident happened at about 12:45 p.m. No other students were injured.

The boy, whose name was not released, dropped about 15 feet, Wong said.

He was awake and alert when taken to the hospital, she said. Details on his injuries were not available.
