Centennial was the only city to pass Question 200 on Tuesday – the one city where the ballot measure has no immediate effect.

Voters in Greeley and Englewood rejected the proposal, which would block cities from deducting union dues from public employees’ paychecks.

The measure’s supporters say public payroll systems shouldn’t serve as a middle man for politically active organizations. Opponents said the measure was aimed at hampering unions, which would have to find new ways to collect dues.

None of Centennial’s 35 employees are unionized, but John Andrews, chairman of the Ask First Centennial campaign, said proponents want to prevent the problem before it starts.

Nearly 70 percent of the 15,717 votes cast in Centennial supported the measure. In Greeley, the measure failed 52.2 percent to 47.8 percent of 12,742 votes, according to unofficial reports.

Englewood voters rejected the measure by a wider margin: 56.3 percent to 43.7 percent of 4,573 votes cast Tuesday.

Five county commissions statewide have previously adopted the measure without referring it to voters: in Arapahoe, El Paso, Jefferson, Mesa and Weld counties.
