Getting your player ready...

The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team will be without three players in its season-opening game Saturday against Colorado-Colorado Springs after coach Heath Schroyer decided to redshirt a freshman and sit two others to comply with NCAA rules, the coach said.

Schroyer said Afam Muojeke will redshirt the season after he twisted a knee the first week of practice, setting back his development.

“We felt it was best to give him an opportunity to get healthy and develop physically for a year,” Schroyer said.

Also, freshmen Marios Matalon and Mikhail Linskens will sit out the beginning of the season to follow NCAA rules for the transfer of international players. Matalon will sit out the first three games of the Cowboys’ season and Linskens will miss the first five games.

“But we were willing to face missing them for a few games to get these outstanding players into our program,” Schroyer said. “The NCAA looks at how much each individual plays with their international team and then makes a determination on how many games each individual must sit out.”

Deaguero brothers picked to preseason RMAC wrestling team. Brothers Joey and Jared Deaguero of Adams State were named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason wrestling team, leading the Grizzlies to a No. 2 ranking in the RMAC’s preseason poll, as voted by the league’s 10 coaches.

Joey Deaguero (141 pounds) and Jared Deaguero (184) join teammate Arsenia Barksdale (125) as the three Adams State grapplers on the list. Nebraska-

Kearney, with four wrestlers on the team, was picked to win its seventh consecutive RMAC championship. The Lopers got eight of the nine possible first-place votes.

Western State was picked to finish third, and Chadron State was tabbed No. 4.

Fort Lewis’ Schwab picks up RMAC honor. Fort Lewis blocker Nicole Schwab earned a second RMAC player of the year award. She is just the fifth player to win the award twice.

Schwab, a senior, leads the 12 players voted to the league’s first team and joins Metro State’s Julie Green-

McFarland, CU-Colorado Springs’ Brooke Akers and Nebraska-Kearney’s Nikki Scott as unanimous first-team selections.

Nebraska-Kearney’s Rick Squiers was named the RMAC coach of the year.
