AT ISSUE
Love is overrated
What: The NFL hates the Patriots.
Background: New England has taken on the role of NFL villain. Pats coach Bill Belichick has long played the part of the cranky, uncooperative coach, but this year he and his team have taken it to a new level. The disdain for the Patriots took off this year during the infamous Spy- gate, when the team was found guilty of stealing signs via videotape from the Jets’ sideline. Last week, in the Patriots’ win at Indianapolis, it seemed the entire country was rooting for the good guy Colts instead of the uptight, no-nonsense Patriots.
Williamson’s take: Whether those in the league and fans around the country like it or not, get used to the Patriots. They aren’t going anywhere. And they don’t care if they are liked or not. In fact, don’t be surprised if New England runs the table and goes 16-0 simply out of spite. Belichick has his team thinking it is going up against the world. And the Patriots are responding. They may be vilified these days, but the Patriots are a great team that is reveling in upsetting the apple cart.
THE HOT SEAT
Give Reid a break
Who: Eagles coach Andy Reid
When: The rest of the season.
Why: Reid’s’ family problems have been played out in front of the entire country. Reid’s two oldest children are jailed after well-documented drug issues. The judge who sentenced his oldest son condemned the family and called it a household in crisis. With the Eagles floundering, many people have called for Reid to step down to deal with his family; his family issues are being blamed for the tough season. This is a terrible time for this man, who has been both an outstanding coach and an upstanding person. Reid deserves a break on and off the field. But it won’t happen. Don’t be surprised if he has to cave to the pressure and leave his job as a result of this mess after the season.
ROOKIE WATCH
Time to step up
Who: Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe
When: Sunday against the Broncos.
Why: Bowe has been an intriguing talent for the Chiefs. A star at LSU and a favorite target of JaMarcus Russell, Bowe is a big target who has made his share of big plays already. However, he suffered a hamstring tweak last week against Green Bay, and his playing time could be limited. Teams have been throwing well against Denver in recent weeks, so the Chiefs will likely try to get Bowe on the field. With Larry Johnson hurt, the Chiefs will need to pass the ball. Tight end Tony Gonzalez will be a main target, but Bowe would be another important factor in the Chiefs’ passing game if he’s healthy.
