A bridge-replacement project will cause major delays and the rerouting of Interstate 25 traffic north of Denver.

The 128th Avenue bridge over I-25 in Adams County will be torn down beginning Sunday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, 128th Avenue will be shut completely between Lincoln and Delaware streets. This closure will be in effect 24 hours a day until the new bridge is completed, in about eight months.

Traffic on 128th Avenue will be detoured to Washington or Huron streets and then over to 120th or 136th avenues and back to I-25.

Traffic on I-25 will be affected by the demolition, which should be completed by Thursday.

  •  A single lane of northbound and southbound I-25 will be closed between 120th Avenue and 136th Avenue from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  •  All lanes of northbound and southbound I-25 between 120th Avenue and 136th Avenue will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

The detour route for traffic on I-25 north will be to exit at 120th Avenue, go east to Washington Street, then take Washington Street north to 136th Avenue and back to I-25.

The detour route for traffic on I-25 south will be to exit at 136th Avenue, go west to Huron Street, then take Huron Street south to 120th Avenue and back to I-25.

Major delays are expected during the demolition, and alternate routes are strongly advised, CDOT officials said.

The new $6.3 million bridge is expected to be complete by the end of June.
