A pair of Colorado State University students are sleeping in new digs for the time being after a fire Friday afternoon booted them from their apartment building.

The fire broke out around 4 p.m. on the third-floor balcony of a unit at 1400 W. Elizabeth St., west of the CSU campus. The building, called the International House, is an off-campus dormitory for older CSU students, including many international students.

Students who were home at the time were able to evacuate the building, and nobody was injured, Poudre Fire Authority Capt. Patrick Love said in a news release. Twenty-seven firefighters rushed to the blaze and had it extinguished in about five minutes.

Love said cigarettes improperly left in potting soil sparked the blaze. Damage was limited to the second and third-floor balconies and estimated at about $4,000.

Two students were displaced as a result of the blaze, and CSU officials worked with them to find temporary accommodations, Love said.
