In a move designed to boost the nation’s trout and salmon populations, Trout Unlimited and the Whirling Disease Foundation will merge efforts to combat the growing problem of aquatic nuisance species.

The two organizations will combine their resources to combat the Myxobolus cerebralis parasite that causes whirling disease as well as the broader issues of invasive species. The thrust will include a bid for increased funding of research, along with an accelerated education program to teach anglers how to curtail the spread of disease.

Small game access. A free Nov. 28 Denver seminar will provide small-game enthusiasts with information about how to best utilize the Colorado Division of Wildlife’s Walk-In Access program.

The ongoing pheasant season will be a particular point of emphasis during a presentation that will concentrate on the northeast and southeast regions, where most of the leased access land is located.

Space is limited for the 6:30-9 p.m. program at DOW’s education building, 6060 Broadway. Call 303-291-7545 for reservations.

Gunnison ranch purchase. In a move aimed at preserving key Gunnison sage grouse habitat, the Division of Wildlife has purchased the 1,600-acre Miller ranch in the Ohio Creek Valley north of Gunnison.

The property, in the family for more than a century, had been coveted by developers. Half the funding came from Great Outdoors Colorado, the rest from the DOW Habitat Stamp Program.
