WASHINGTON — Kinder Morgan Energy Partners could get federal approval for its $4.4 billion Rockies Express pipeline by early spring, the head of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission said Thursday.

“We’ve been able to rework the schedule and accelerate the timetable,” Joseph Kelliher said after the commission’s open meeting.

Houston-based Kinder Morgan had said the previous timetable might delay completion of the pipeline, which would bring natural gas from production areas in Wyoming and Colorado to markets in the Midwest and Northeast.

Kinder Morgan fell 17 cents to $50.51 in composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
