Long-awaited wet weather could be on the way, possibly bringing snow to the mountains and rain to lower elevations early next week.

So far this month Denver has seen only a trace of precipitation, and mountain ski resorts are collectively hoping for much-needed snow in advance of the holiday season.

A Pacific cold front out of the Northwest is chugging toward Colorado and could bring snow to the high country starting Monday night, said Bernie Meier, a spokesman with the National Weather Service.

“It’s the best shot of getting some moisture that we’ve had so far this month,” Meier said.

And as Coloradans desperate for moisture anxiously wait for the front’s arrival, we’ll just have to settle for mostly sunny days and high temperatures in the 60s in Denver.

Today, Denver’s high should top out at around 62 degrees under mostly sunny skies and with light winds up to 7 mph, according to the weather service.

Tonight in Denver the low will drop to about 32 degrees, and winds will remain calm.

Friday’s weather in Denver will be about the same, sunny and mild, with winds picking up slightly and topping out at about 14 mph.

When the cold front hits the state, sometime late Monday, it should bring snow to the mountains.

Denver could see snow showers overnight Monday with rain forecast for Tuesday.

The front should bring moisture and cooler temperatures through at least Wednesday, according to the weather service.
