Sun Microsystems Inc. has its 440-acre campus in Louisville under contract, but the buyer’s identity is a mystery even to many involved in the deal.

Stew Mosko, senior vice president at Fuller Real Estate who is listing the property for Sun, said he doesn’t know who the buyer is or how much the property will be sold for.

“It has been sort of like dealing with the CIA,” Mosko said.

The potential buyer is in its due-diligence period, and there is no guarantee the deal will close.

The property was the campus of Storage Technology Corp. until StorageTek was bought by Santa Clara, Calif.- based Sun for $4.1 billion in 2005.

Sun, which put the property on the market last year, has been moving employees from the Louisville campus to its main Colorado campus in Broomfield.

Louisville Mayor Chuck Sisk said he does not know who is buying the property but that even if he did, he would be unable to discuss it.

“We have agreed that Sun will be the one to make any determinations as to announcements,” Sisk said. “That’s been our agreement with Sun since they purchased StorageTek.”

Don Elliman, director of the state Office of Economic Development and International Trade, said he has heard a sales price of $60 million tossed around, but he couldn’t confirm it. He said that figure would be in the ballpark for a premier location like the former StorageTek campus.
