A water-main break under one of the busiest streets in Boulder caused a buildup of ice, the closure of one of the street’s lanes and water to be shut off to the area for several hours this morning.

By noon, the water had been restored, according to Felix Gallo, transportation and utilities-maintenance coordinator for Boulder Public Works.

The break was reported on U.S. 36 — also known as 28th Street — about 7:50 a.m., according to Gallo. It has resulted in traffic on southbound 28th being reduced to one lane between Walnut Street and Canyon Boulevard.

Gallo said a seven-person crew plans to have all lanes of the road open by 5 p.m.

The cause of the break has yet to be determined.

A fast-food restaurant was affected by the break, Gallo said, and crews hooked up a garden hose from a nearby fire hydrant to the restaurant so it could serve its noon-hour customers.

Gallo said fire-hydrant water is treated, drinkable water.
