ASPEN, COLO. — Scant snow means no paycheck for some seasonal ski workers, so the Aspen Skiing Co. is offering free dinners to staffers who are still waiting to punch the clock.

The company has been able to open only a handful of runs at its four Aspen ski areas. As a result, some chairlift operators and ski instructors haven’t been called to work yet.

About 40 people showed up on Sunday night for the first free dinner of pork chops, vegetables and salad, resort spokesman Jeff Hanle said. He said dinners will be offered at least through Friday.

Aspen Mountain had two of its eight lifts operating Tuesday and Snowmass had five of 22 running. The Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands areas are not expected to open until Dec. 12.

Hanle has said he couldn’t estimate how many employees were affected by the limited openings.

Other ski areas across the West are also suffering.
