Two choices immediately come to mind in a week that allows for catching up. You can go to “Enchanted,” the pleasing princess in the city tale starring Castle Rock’s own Amy Adams as Giselle. Or you can head to the Starz FilmCenter where the enchanting Beatles musical “Across the Universe” is playing. Director and co-writer Julie Taymor figured out a love story that lets characters with names like Jude, Lucy Prudence and Jo Jo come together in New York City during the volatile, thrilling ’60s. Either film you choose, you’ll be OK, we won’t say it again. But you will be. Lisa Kennedy

Television

Got a heart in need of warming? A new Hallmark Hall of Fame offering, “Pictures of Hollis Woods,” debuts at 8 tonight on CBS, locally on KCNC-Channel 4. Sissy Spacek, Alfre Woodard, Judith Ivey and James Tupper appear in the sweet story about an orphan who is placed with a new foster mother, a retired teacher who shares Hollis’ passion for art. When the teacher (Spacek) begins exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s disease, Hollis (Jodelle Ferland) fears she’ll be shunted back to her earlier foster home. Based on the book by Patricia Reilly Giff. Classical music

The Jupiter String Quartet is a young chamber ensemble on the way up. It won the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America in January, and that’s just the latest in a string of honors. The Jupiter will present a sold-out concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Denver’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts, 2344 E. Iliff Ave., as part of the Friends of Chamber Music series. Some returned tickets might be available at the door. 303-388-9839 or friendsofchamber . The group also will appear along with other musicians at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Imig Music Building, 18th Street and Euclid Avenue, as part of the CU College of Music’s faculty series. Admission to the Boulder concert is free. 303-492-8008 or . Kyle MacMillan

Visual arts

Hailed as one of Denver’s finest painters in the 1990s, William Stockman has returned after a considerable period away. He is featured at the Singer Gallery in the first major show of his work in nearly a decade. Titled “Nothing is Hiding: Recent Paintings and Drawings,” it opened this weekend and runs through Jan. 18. Curator Simon Zalkind writes that in this body of work, “humanity with its distortions, flaws and wounds is intimately explored.” The gallery is part of the Mizel Arts & Culture Center, 350 S. Dahlia St. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Free. 303-316-6360 or . Kyle MacMillan

Stage

Does the world really need another “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”? When it’s directed by Nick Sugar, you kind of have to see it to believe it. Town Hall’s high-energy telling of Jacob’s chosen son and his Elvis-ish Pharaoh puts the “mega” in the “megamix.” And when music director Donna Debreceni is doing your mixing, and belter Traci Kern is doing your narrating, suffice to say the Hall’s walls are gonna shake. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays through Dec. 30 at the Town Hall Arts Center, 2450 W. Main St., Littleton. $18-$34. 303-794-2787 or . John Moore

Popular music

Five minutes of your time — that’s all I want. OK, you’re online, right? First go to Voxtrot‘s MySpace page (myspace.com/voxtrot) and listen to the Austin band’s “The Start of Something.” It’s great, right, those stilted rhythms that remind you of the Smiths and that soft voice that takes you all the way to your happy place? OK, now make your way to Vampire Weekend‘s site (myspace.com/ vampireweekend) to grab a listen to “Oxford Comma.” You might have read about these New York cats and their last swing through Denver in these pages, with their penchant for smarty pants lyrics laid elegantly across worldbeat-influenced indie rock. It’s beautiful, I agree. All right, there are two new, brilliant indie bands you should know. And — guess what — they’re both playing Denver this coming week. Voxtrot brings its show to the Bluebird on Friday, and Vampire Weekend plays the Bluebird the following night, Saturday. More info: . Ricardo Baca

Night life

Club-hopping in LoDo isn’t cheap, as anyone who has spent more than a few hours there knows. But French-themed Le Rouge still offers one of the more attractive incentives. Sure, everyone’s got a drink special, but Le Rouge doesn’t skimp. The club opened in March with its popular Ladies Soiree nights, which generated long lines, before pulling the event off the table. Well, it’s back (and has been for a while) so drop in Thursday for free Moet champagne for ladies all night and tunes from DJ Elite. Dinner reservations net a free bottle of wine, and parties of 10 or more get free limo service. Also keep an eye on their Passion du Mode Wednesdays, which offer free martinis for the ladies after gents buy the first round. 1448 Market St. 303-892-5555 or . John Wenzel
