DURANGO, Colo.—A New Mexico man will spend 15 days in jail after pleading guilty to causing an accident that killed three teenagers in southwest Colorado.
A La Plata County judge ordered the sentence Tuesday to 25-year-old Eugene Chavez of Grants, N.M. He entered his pleas last week to one count of careless driving causing death and one count of careless driving causing bodily injury — both misdemeanors.
Chavez is a commercial truck driver who was accused of hitting a sport utility vehicle March 17th and killing three Colorado teens.
Eighteen-year-old Larry Michael Romero of Durango died, along with 16-year-old Carly Martin and 13-year-old Raymond Bill Millich Junior, both of Bayfield.
Chavez’s attorney, and prosecutors, said the sentence was fair.
