Ski racer Erik Schlopy and his wife, former Olympic swimming champion Summer Sanders, are expecting their second child in January — and hoping their son doesn’t jump the gun.
The due date is Jan. 8. Schlopy plans to race a World Cup event Jan. 5-6 in Adelboden, Switzerland, then fly home the day before their son is supposed to arrive.
“Skiing is all about timing, in more ways than one,” Schlopy said after a recent training session at Keystone. “We timed it perfectly. Hopefully, he will hang on until I can get home and be there for it.”
Sanders won three individual medals at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics before embarking on a sports television and acting career. Schlopy is a three-time Olympian in skiing. Their first child, daughter Skye Bella, will be 2 in April.
Schlopy is expected to compete in NorAm races at Keystone next week and a World Cup giant slalom at Beaver Creek on Sunday.
