ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan volleyball team upset No. 21-ranked Colorado State in straight games Saturday, winning 30-24, 30-27, 30-23 at Crisler Arena to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
Colorado State (23-11), the 14th seed in the tournament, was led by Jaime Strauss’ match-high 15 kills and 18 digs.
Michigan has defeated Colorado State twice this season, winning six of seven games.
“I think with the scouting report, our players had a good idea of what Colorado State liked to do,” Michigan coach Mark Rosen said. “Right from the beginning of Game 1, our blockers did a good job of executing.”
The Wolverines (24-10) advanced to their first Sweet 16, where they will face Big Ten rival and No. 1-ranked Penn State on Friday.
Michigan’s 14 blocks helped hold off the Rams. CSU twice nearly erased a seven-point deficit in the first game. But Michigan held on.
Colorado State ralled from a four-point deficit in the third game to tie the score at 12-12. But Michigan’s Megan Bower and Maggie Busch scored on two kills and the Wolverines went ahead by six points.
Senior Tonya Mokelki finished her CSU career with nine kills, a service ace and three blocks.
