ST. GEORGE, Utah — Western Oregon had 75 yards in quarterback sacks, scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone and had 300 yards in total offense in downing Colorado Mines 26-12 in the 22nd Dixie Rotary Bowl at Hansen Stadium.
The Wolves (9-2) reached nine victories for just the fourth time in 78 years of collegiate football. The Orediggers, third-place finishers in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, finished 7-5.
WOU’s Shaun Kauleinamoku scored twice, on a 1-yard pass from Mark Thorson and a 24-yard reverse, to put the Wolves ahead 13-0 early in the second quarter.
Trailing 19-0 in the fourth quarter, Mines got a Derek Dykstra 4-yard reception for a TD from David Pesek. The Orediggers were led by their defense, which intercepted Thorson four times. Pesek passed for a game-high 228 yards on 26-of-40 completions.
DIVISION I-AA
BOONE, N.C. — Armanti Edwards threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead two-time champion Appalachian State to a 38-35 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday in the Football Championship Subdivision playoff quarterfinals.
Edwards had 221 yards passing and rushed for 126 yards for the Mountaineers (11-2), who tied an NCAA record with their 10th straight postseason victory.
Appalachian State, which stunned Michigan in Ann Arbor on national TV to open the season, built a 38-21 lead on Kevin Richardson’s 16-yard touchdown run with 6:07 left, then had to hold off a furious Eastern Washington rally.
Dale Morris scored from a yard out to cut the lead to 38-28 and Matt Nichols found Matt Martin for a 2-yard score to make it 38-35 with 28 seconds remaining.
The Mountaineers then recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock, advancing to the semifinals next week against Richmond, which beat Wofford 21-10.
In the other two games, Delaware defeated Northern Iowa 39-27 and Southern Illinois edged Massachusetts 34-27. Delaware and Southern Illinois play in the other semifinal.
DIVISION II
ALLENDALE, Mich. — Brad Iciek ran for four touchdowns and passed for two others, leading Grand Valley State over Central Washington 41-21 in the quarterfinals.
The Lakers (12-0), two-time defending national champions, extended their division record for consecutive wins to 40.
NW Missouri St. 26, Chadron St. 13 CHADRON, Neb. — Xavier Omon ran for a school-record 309 yards and three touchdowns, making it the second straight year the Bearcats (11-1) beat the Eagles in the quarterfinals.
DIVISION III
ALLIANCE, Ohio — Greg Micheli threw three touchdown passes to Pierre Garcon, and Nate Kmic ran for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Mount Union (13-0) extended its winning streak to 36 games by beating St. John Fisher 52-10.
