Avalanche captain Joe Sakic missed his second consecutive game Monday night because of a groin injury.
Sakic, second on the team in assists (15) and points (22), had his 232-consecutive-game streak end Saturday at Los Angeles.
Colorado, a 3-2 loser to San Jose at the Pepsi Center, departs today for Columbus and plays the Blue Jackets on Wednesday. Avs coach Joel Quenneville said Sakic is “doubtful, because he hasn’t been on the ice yet. We’ll see.”
With defenseman Kurt Sauer (neck) already on the injured reserve list, forwards Marek Svatos (groin) and Ian Laperriere (knee) were unavailable against the Sharks. They are listed as day to day.
J.R. contributes.
Veteran forward Jeremy Roenick, in his first season with the Sharks, didn’t produce a point but was one of the Sharks’ unsung heroes.
He screened goalie Jose Theodore on Steve Bernier’s second-period goal that made it 2-1.
“The puck came right on my stick and I shot it, and I know J.R. was right in front of Theodore and (that’s why) he didn’t see the puck,” Bernier said. “Great job by J.R.”
Footnotes.
The Sharks’ Evgeni Nabokov (13-8-4) is the only NHL goalie to start every one of his team’s games. Backup Dimitri Patzold has come off the bench twice. The announced attendance was 15,213, fewer than 100 more than the all-time low at Pepsi Center. Last week’s game against Edmonton drew a record-low 15,128. Colorado fell to 10-3 at home, and center Paul Stastny had his three-game points streak end. He had 22 points in his previous 12 home games. Colorado remains two wins shy of reaching 1,000 wins in its franchise history. In 38 seasons of the Avs-Nordiques, including 12 in Denver, the club is 998-887-261.
