Marcus Thomas and Steven Harris were roommates at the University of Florida and now live together in Denver. After Harris’ promotion from the practice squad this week, they once again may play together as rookies.
“I love it,” said Harris after his first practice as an active member of the Broncos’ 53-man roster. “Me and Marcus have been together for five years, and to be on the same line, working together, getting ready for a real NFL game is crazy.”
Thomas, a fourth-round pick, has been playing most of the season and is expected to get more playing time in the wake of fellow defensive tackle Sam Adams being released Tuesday. Denver defensive boss Jim Bates said younger players such as Thomas and Kenny Peterson, who has played well since being re-signed last month, will get extended play in the wake of Adams’ release.
“It was nothing against Sam,” Bates said. “We just wanted to play younger players.”
The team looked at several available veteran defensive linemen Tuesday, but opted to sign Harris, who was excelling on the practice squad. Harris was signed as an undrafted free agent to join Gator teammates Jarvis Moss and Thomas on the line.
“This is great for Steven,” Thomas said. “He deserves to move up. Us young guys have a chance. You see a big name like ‘Big Sam Adams’ get cut and you notice it. We have to step up and make some plays for this team.”
Adams, who had 17 tackles in 11 starts, went unclaimed Wednesday. He is free to sign anywhere in the league. Cornerback Jeff Shoate, also cut Tuesday, went unclaimed. Denver announced the signing of defensive back Marviel Underwood along with Harris. They also announced the signing of practice squad defensive tackle Michael Bozeman.
