An infant died in Greeley today as a result of injuries consistent with child abuse, and the baby’s father has been arrested in connection with the death.
Three-month-old Johnnyce Hernandez was already dead when her parents brought her to the North Colorado Medical Center. Greeley police arrested John Luis Hernandez, 30, on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death, according to a press release.
Officers responded to the emergency room after an autopsy of the child indicated her death was a result of trauma.
“It was a process of elimination,” said Sgt. Joe Tymkowych of Hernandez’s arrest. “Through the course of the investigation, the information gathered pointed more directly at the father.”
Tymkowych said he could not comment on the extent of the child’s injuries nor the time of death because that information has no been released by the coroner, but the mother is not under investigation at this time, Tymkowych said.
Hernandez, who has also gone by John Elworthy, Tymkowych said, is being held in the Weld County Jail without bond and on a parole hold.
Hernandez had been released on parole prior to his arrest, but Tymkowych said did not know his previous offences.
