Frontier Airlines’ Lynx Aviation turboprop subsidiary has received full federal authority to begin operations, and plans to begin flying the Lynx turboprops Friday.

The U.S. Department of Transportation said it received notification of authority for Lynx from the Federal Aviation Administration and granted authority for Lynx this morning, “so they are now able to operate,” said U.S. Department of Transportation spokesman Bill Mosley.

Lynx will fly Q400 turboprop planes from Denver to Rapid City, S.D.; Sioux City, Iowa; Wichita; Billings, Mont.; Albuquerque; and Tulsa, Okla. It also eventually plans to fly the Q400s to mountain resorts.

Frontier originally intended to begin flying Lynx last summer, but the start date was delayed pending federal certification.

Frontier started flying the Rapid City, Sioux City and Wichita routes with other planes from regional partners Horizon, Republic and ExpressJet. It will replace those planes with the Lynx turboprops.
