A heavy winter storm will blanket the state today on the heels of a big storm that buried the ski areas with much-needed snow over the weekend.

This morning’s commute is expected to be slow and slippery, with the metro area receiving between 3 and 6 inches of snow, according to forecasts.

Temperatures are forecast to reach a high of 24 degrees today and drop into the single digits tonight.

The Eastern Plains are expected to receive ice and snow — between 2 and 4 inches through tonight.

The southwestern mountains around Durango and Telluride could receive 1 to 2 feet of snow, with up to a foot falling in Gunnison.

The central mountains from Steamboat Springs through Vail and Aspen should receive up to 10 inches today, according to the National Weather Service.

As the storm moves out of the state, Wednesday is expected to be clear and sunny.
