COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. — A woman who worked for Colorado Springs Utilities for 35 years has been arrested on charges of embezzling more than $435,000.

Donna Inzer, 69, surrendered to police Thursday on a felony theft charge. Her phone number was unlisted and it wasn’t immediately known if she had an attorney.

Inzer, a former head cashier for the city-owned utility, is accused of taking money from payments and then altering daily balance sheets so the missing money would not be detected in bank deposit records.

Investigators said the thefts took place between December 2003 and February.

Authorities began investigating in February when a commercial customer said it had not been credited for a payment. Utilities spokesman Steve Berry declined to comment on how the thefts went undetected for more than three years.

Inzer, who started work for the utility in 1972, left her job on March 14, customer service spokesman Kelly Means said. He did not say why she left or if any complaints had been filed against her.

Means said Inzer was a “solid performer” who worked mostly in the cashier department.

The utility said nearly $420,000 of the missing money had been recovered through insurance. Utility officials said they will try to recover the rest through restitution if Inzer is convicted.

Officials said no customers lost money or had account information stolen.
