DENVER—An Evergreen man is dead after being hit while he was walking across a state highway.

The Colorado State Patrol says 65-year-old James Steele was killed about 7:30 p.m. Monday when he walked into the path of a 1990 Mazda MX6 that was westbound on Colorado 74.

The Jefferson County coroner pronounced Steele dead at the scene.

The Mazda driver, 23-year-old Nathan Meader of Conifer, was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the accident.
