Getting your player ready...

One of the most popular Travel sections of the year, the Paper Trails issue, is back, with as many photos from readers sharing their vacations, educational trips, family reunions and expeditions from around the globe as we could fit.

Meanwhile, the online Paper Trails community just keeps growing, with more members joining the blog each day to post their own photos ().

As always, the big question is: Why wasn’t my Paper Trail chosen? Picking the Paper Trails photos each week is a tough process, and we don’t take it lightly. Everyone hopes to have a photo published in the newspaper, but we can print only a handful each week, and sometimes fewer, depending on space constraints.

One of the main things we look for is clarity. The photos must be of high-enough resolution to reprint in the newspaper. We do accept good-quality prints, but they too must be clear.

Also, we request that the photo be of something more than an up- close shot of you and the Travel section. Get something else in the background that tells readers where you are. It makes the photos more interesting and eye- catching. In addition, the accompanying information should make readers want to visit the area — we’re looking for insider information. And please be specific. Telling us that your best meal was steak isn’t helpful. We want to know the name of the restaurant that served it to you.

Sometimes there are too many photos coming from a particular country or area. Know that we receive a lot of photos from Mexico, Peru, Hawaii, Italy and the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. And each week dozens of new photos are mailed and downloaded to the blog, and they are trying for the one to four slots that we have available for that week’s issue.

But that’s all good news because it means we’re traveling. So thank you for traveling with us, and for being a part of the Denver Post Travel section. Happy new year, and safe travels in it.
