CLINTON, Iowa — There’s one figure in Iowa who has had his picture taken with nearly all the candidates: Mr. Potato Head.
“The candidates have been in Iowa forever. Why not have fun with the whole process?” says Andy Green, a 20-year-old with a wide face and a perpetual smile. He’s the kind of guy you’d imagine rushing up to Hillary Rodham Clinton, breathlessly saying: “You need to pose with Mr. Potato Head. You’re the last Democrat to do this.” She complied.
Green inherited the toy from his grandfather and wanted to show the toy around. So wherever he went, so went the spudhead. To the Statue of Liberty, Walt Disney World, the Marine Corps War Memorial. And to meet the candidates. Only two candidates declined Green’s request: Republican Sam Brownback (who has since withdrawn) and Democrat Joe Biden.
Now that he’s met all the presidential wannabes, he’s going after the real deal. Bill Clinton is scheduled to come to the city of Clinton, and Green will be there — Mr. Potato Head in hand.
