A 27-year-old man was killed this morning after being caught in an avalanche on Vail Pass.
The man’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of his family, but the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office said he is a local resident.
The man was skiing with two others when the slide hit at around 11:50 a.m.
All three were wearing avalanche beacons.
The two other skiers located their companion and began rescue efforts. They performed CPR and called for help. The Vail Resorts Ski Patrol and Vail Mountain Ski Patrol responded.
The men were skiing in an area called the East Vail Chutes. It is not part of the resort’s terrain, according to Shannon Cordingly of the sheriff’s office.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
