PARIS — Nicolas Sarkozy, who less than three months ago became the first French president to divorce while in office, is now reported to be on the verge of becoming the first one to wed while occupying the Elysee Palace.
The presidential press office did little Monday to dampen a newspaper account that Sarkozy, 52, plans next month to marry Carla Bruni, 40, the supermodel-turned-pop singer he has publicly wooed in recent weeks. “I can’t confirm it,” said presidential spokeswoman Aurelia Jublin. “Just ask him tomorrow.”
Today, Sarkozy is giving what may be the most anticipated news conference of his presidency. The weekly newspaper Journal du Dimanche quoted unnamed sources saying Sarkozy gave Italian-born Bruni a heart-shaped diamond engagement ring during a Christmas trip to Egypt as a prelude to a Feb. 8 or 9 wedding.
