A 19-year-old skier who authorities believe skied off a cliff at Purgatory at the Durango Mountain Resort was found dead at the base of the cliff Sunday, officials said today.
The skier was identified as Logan Jameson of Durango.
According to Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, at about 1:30 p.m. Sunday, two people on a ski lift at the resort spotted ski tracks coming off the cliff and what looked like an impact area at the bottom. However, they saw no skier.
They immediately reported what they had seen, and within minutes, Ski Patrol members reached the spot. There, in a hole, they discovered Jameson. He was upside down and had no pulse. They began CPR, but could not revive him.
Bender said Jameson was found in an out-of-bounds area of the resort, located 25 miles north of Durango.
Jameson was a longtime Durango resident and had attended Durango High School.
Bender said that in February 2005, Jameson was rescued by helicopter from another out-of-bounds area. He had skied into deep snow up to his chest and was unable to get out, said Bender.
“He was a very active and longtime skier,” said Bender. “He enjoyed skiing off head walls, where you become airborne.”
