With a losing record comes less recognition.
A three-year streak making first team all-pro ended for Broncos left cornerback Champ Bailey on Wednesday when he was named to the second team.
The all-pro cornerbacks were New England’s Asante Samuel and San Diego’s Antonio Cromartie. Samuel got 40 of the 50 votes cast for The Associated Press honor, and Cromartie garnered 24. Bailey was third with 11 votes.
Smith recuperating. Broncos receiver Rod Smith is recuperating from hip surgery in Southern California on Tuesday in Santa Monica. It was the second hip surgery for Smith, 37, in the past 11 months.
Smith’s latest surgery was performed with the hopes it will keep him from needing hip replacement surgery. Smith has not ruled out playing again, but he has admitted it appears unlikely that he’ll return.
Houston connection. Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak, a former Broncos offensive coordinator, hired former Denver offensive line coach Alex Gibbs as assistant head coach and offensive line coach. Kubiak also promoted Kyle Shana-
han to offensive coordinator. Shanahan, the son of Denver coach Mike Shanahan, also will coach the quarterbacks.
Coaching shuffle. Former Broncos linebackers coach Joe Baker might decide to stay with the team in a quality-control role. He was replaced by Jim Ryan this week. There could be some other tweaks to the staff in the coming week.
