Getting your player ready...

Time for change “It was refreshing to read a column that hopefully Broncos owner Pat Bowlen will read, and realize just how far from greatness his team has fallen since the retirement of John Elway. I loved your fact that the eight NFL teams with fewer playoff wins than Denver since 1999 have used a combined 30 coaches in nine seasons, while Bowlen keeps going with Mike Shanahan. Enough is enough, Mr. Bowlen! Please get rid of Shanahan before things get even worse.”

Michael, Aurora

Kiz: Right here, right now, I’m guessing these young Broncos will grow up and win a playoff game next season. But if they don’t? That would be one playoff victory in 10 years for Denver, and we’d find out how much Bowlen really loves Shanahan.

Vitriolic comments. “You state the Broncos are mired in mediocrity a mere two seasons after they played in the AFC championship game. You call New England coach Bill Belichick arrogant and Shanahan evil, while your own vitriol, masquerading as winking commentary, clearly
paints you as The Post’s Walter Winchell. Perhaps you could benefit from some self-affirmation therapy, presuming it doesn’t include Shanahan’s picture on a dartboard.”

Karl, Denver

Kiz: Well, that hurts my feelings. But I’ll try to go on. Am I tougher than Winchell, the late newspaper columnist who became a multimedia star decades before the invention of Tony Kornheiser? No, I’m a bigger softie than Mr. Whipple.

Proper perspective. “Finally, a rational column from the DP sports journalists about Shanahan that is not pandering to the masses, is not cheerleading for the Donkeys, is not castigating a fan who takes journalists to task for not writing objectively about Shanahan. You guys finally
get it.”

Paul, Breckenridge

Kiz: One man’s Winchell is another man’s Ring Lardner. Is my work fish wrap or fair commentary? It’s all a matter of taste or a matter of what you think of Shanahan.

Cutler capable. “If it is true Shanahan’s fate is in the hands of quarterback Jay Cutler, he is in great hands. Cutler is going to be a phenomenal QB. On another note, can someone shut up Philip Rivers?”

Dennis, Old Bridge, N.J.

Kiz: Indianapolis will leave Rivers dumbstruck in the AFC playoffs. Who will win between New York and Dallas? I dunno. But, just one time, I’d love to see the Cowboys take the field in those pink-and-white Dallas uniforms favored by Jessica Simpson.

Legislating success. “Blame it on the Patriot Act. When did the Boston Red Sox break the curse of the Bambino? After the Patriot Act was passed. The winning of the Super Bowls, the video surveillance, and I’m sure there’s more we won’t find out until the files are declassified.”

Allen, Parker

Kiz: So is it safe to assume you were not the guy seen waving the “Belichick for President” banner during the primary race in New
Hampshire?

Still in Elway’s shadow. “The man-love that ESPN commentators have for New England quarterback Tom Brady is nauseating. I’m not a
Broncos fan, but, I’m a huge Elway fan. And Brady is no Elway.”

Omar, Erie

Kiz: You didn’t ask for my top three pro QBs, but here they are: 1) Joe Montana, 2) Johnny Unitas, 3) Otto Graham.

Parting shot. And today’s parting shot is a demand for justice in a hairy situation. When hockey’s Lanny McDonald or baseball’s “Goose” Gossage is lauded for the coolest facial hair in sports history, them’s fighting words, buddy. “He can’t match the save records of ‘Goose,’ but former St. Louis Cardinals closer Al Hrabosky did have the great Fu Manchu, an intimidating presence on the mound and an even more intimidating nickname: ‘The Mad Hungarian.’ Hrabosky should have at least appeared in your list of great mustaches.”
