PUEBLO — It took six years to uncover a killing but only a couple of weeks to find a suspect after a pet Chihuahua brought home a human jawbone.
The Pueblo Chieftain reported Sunday that Charles Gross, 47, was arrested Saturday after he allegedly told authorities that he shot a man in self-defense in September 2001.
The man’s bones were found Jan. 4 underneath Gross’ former mobile home after a dog trotted home with the jawbone. Portions of a skeleton were found last weekend by a cadaver dog, and more were discovered Saturday at Gross’ new home.
It wasn’t the home where the man was shot — Gross said he had moved and took some of the bones with him hidden inside a 55-gallon barrel, police reported.
The victim’s name has not been released.
Bail for Gross was set at $100,000.
