Canon’s latest entry-level video camera, the ZR950, does not skimp on specs. But it also does not carry a lot of doodads or protrusions like a TV-station rig. Instead it is smooth-edged for popping out of a pocket to capture the moment when Junior suddenly comes in goal range — even from the high school version of nosebleed seats.

This MiniDV tape camcorder, with a 37X optical zoom range, was introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week and will sell for $280 when it ships this month.

An “easy mode” sets all controls for those who do not want to fiddle, and the 2.7-inch LCD screen flips around and glows bright white to become a portrait light.

For your deck of sports-legend cards, you can shoot 1-megapixel still photos onto a standard SD memory chip.
