SUNRISE, Fla. — Scott Parker’s value to the Avalanche was in evidence Saturday night at Carolina with a dominant fight victory, which seemed to spur on his team. But the downside of the occasional roughhousing by the Avs enforcer came into play Sunday, when his third-period penalty led to a tying Florida Panthers goal.

Avs coach Joel Quenneville wasn’t all that happy with Parker’s decision to take a roughing penalty with 10:27 left in the third and the Avs leading 3-2. The Panthers tied it on Olli Jokinen’s power- play goal.

“It was a tough time to take a penalty,” Quenneville said. “There’s a fine line that guys have to have. At this stage of a guy’s career, he’s got to know that and we’ve got to be better in that area.”

Parker didn’t play after that, logging 5:25 overall.

He ain’t heavy.

Florida’s Anthony Stewart is the brother of Chris Stewart, the Avs’ 2006 first-round draft pick.

How commercialized is the atmosphere inside the BankAtlantic Center? Even icing violations during a game are “sponsored,” with the public address announcer reading an ad after announcing the icing.

Good try.

Panthers coach Jacques Martin was not displeased, despite not getting two points at home. “I thought it was a good effort. We showed a lot of character coming back three times. We’ve had great success in the shootout, but I guess tonight it was not our turn.”

Taking advantage.

The Avs broke an 0-for-25 power-play drought on the road with Marek Svatos’ second-period goal. It was Svatos’ team- leading 20th goal of the season.

Andrew Brunette nearly got another PP goal — and his third of the night — but he missed by about 3 inches on a shot in the third.
