Team Slipstream/Chipotle isn’t confirmed for the Tour de France yet, but it’s going to the next- best thing. A cycling source said Tuesday the Boulder-based team is guaranteed a spot in this year’s Giro di Italia, the world’s second-biggest race.
The Giro, from May 10-June 1, is considered a precursor to the Tour de France in July. As the the top cycling team in the United States, Slipstream/Chipotle is hoping to make the Tour this year in only the team’s fourth year of operation. The team is in Spain training for the Tour of Qatar.
This year’s 21-stage Giro will cover 2,054 miles starting from Palermo, Sicily, in the south and finishing in Milan in the north.
Slipstream/Chipotle’s race roster has not been finalized, but it’s believed David Millar, left, a Tour de France stage winner, will race in both the Giro and the Tour.
