Colorado Division of Wildlife officials are trying to determine the cause of death of at least eight bighorn sheep east of Gunnison during the last week of December.
An initial discovery of carcasses by a rancher led to a further finding of dead sheep near the place where a herd of about 50 animals makes its winter home. Initial findings suggested pneumonia as the likely cause, but officials are conducting a tissue sample study, and results should be known soon.
