DENVER, COLORADO -- NOVEMBER 28, 2005-- Gov. Bill Owens and First Lady Frances Owens hosted the annual tree lighting at the Governor's Mansion Monday afternoon. This year they invited students and seniors participating in the Rainbow Bridge program. Students from Steele Elementary and seniors from Parkplace retirement community gathered for the Yule event with the Owens to hear carols from Covenant Village Singers and the Owens' reading of The Night Before Christmas before switching on the tree and enjoying holiday refreshments together.

Former Colorado Gov. Bill Owens and his wife, Frances, said today that they are filing for divorce.

They called the decision “private and mutual.”

In a statement e-mailed from Owens’ office, the two said they will remain friends “during and after the process” but asked that the public respect their privacy.
