COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 4-year-old at the center of a child-abuse investigation has died, police said.
Police said Thursday that Madyson Bogard died at Memorial Hospital Wednesday night.
Madyson’s 23-year-old mother, Chrystie Marie Hardy, and Hardy’s 25-year-old boyfriend, Mark Alton Friend, were jailed for investigation of attempted first-degree murder. Bail was set at $100,000.
There was no immediate word from prosecutors on whether they would seek to upgrade the charges.
An autopsy was planned Friday.
An arrest affidavit said Madyson had arrived at the hospital a day earlier with a massive blood clot in the brain. The affidavit said Hardy initially told police the child had fallen on ice, but investigators said she had bruises on her arms, knees and forehead and signs of sexual abuse.
The couple’s infant son was unharmed and was placed in the custody of the El Paso County Department of Human Services, police said.
