Up-and-coming Scottish conductor Douglas Boyd has been appointed for three years as principal guest conductor of the Colorado Symphony, the orchestra announced today.
Boyd made his Denver debut in December 2006, leading Beethoven’s famed Third Symphony, and he connected so well with both musicians and attendees that the symphony decided to bring him back on a more structured, frequent basis.
“There was so much enthusiasm to deepen the relationship,” said Alberto Gutierrez, the orchestra’s artistic administrator. “The musicians thought this was one conductor they would like to see more than once or twice or year.”
Boyd will conduct two sets of concerts in 2008-09 and three sets of three concerts in the two subsequent seasons.
The position of principal guest conductor has been vacant since Peter Oundjian, music director of the Toronto Symphony, served in that capacity for three seasons from 2003-04 through 2005-06.
Boyd also serves as music director of England’s Manchester Camerata, artistic partner of the St. Paul (Minn.) Chamber Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the City of London Sinfonia.
He will make his second appearance in Denver, leading CSO concerts at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 and 26 and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 27.
