Xcel Energy has agreed to match up to $1 million in customer donations made to Energy Outreach Colorado via monthly utility bills this year.

It’s the second time Xcel is matching tax-deductible contributions that help defray utility costs for the poor, disabled and elderly. The program began in August 2006 after legislative approval that allowed customers to check off contributions directly on their bills.

It took a year for nearly 11,000 customers to hit the first $1 million threshold.

“This support will help thousands of Colorado’s seniors, families and disabled people stay safe and warm in their homes this winter,” said Skip Arnold, executive director of EOC, which also funds energy-efficiency upgrades for affordable housing and energy-efficiency education.

EOC has provided $78 million in benefits since 1989, $59 million of it from Xcel.
