AIR FORCE ACADEMY — Matt Fairchild scored three goals and Andrew Volkening had 29 saves as Air Force beat Denver for the first time in 28 years with a 5-2 win Friday night.
Brent Olson and Jeff Hajner had two assists each as Air Force (12-7-4) beat Denver (17-6) for the first time since Jan. 15, 1980, snapping the Pioneers’ 19-game series streak.
Air Force jumped out to a 4-0 second-period lead behind goals from Derrick Burnett, Josh Schaffer and two from Fairchild.
Denver pulled goalie Peter Mannino at 15:09 of the second period after he allowed four goals on 13 shots. Tom May and Patrick Mullen scored goals for Denver.
Fairchild’s third goal came on an empty net with less than five minutes remaining in the game.
