BOULDER, Colo.—Allegations that a student used the video camera on his cell phone to record his teacher’s fingers as she typed a password to her online gradebook, then logged on to change grades, won’t lead to a districtwide change in policy.
The 16-year-old Fairview High School student, whose name is not being released because he’s a juvenile, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony computer crimes. He’s suspected of changing the grades of up to 48 classmates, though school officials believe most didn’t know about the grade tampering.
A police report indicates at least one student asked to have his grade altered.
District officials on Thursday said they will leave classroom use of cell phones up to individual teachers in order to keep up with the changing technology.
“First the issue was them ringing in the classroom, then it was them text-messaging and then it was conveying pictures,” district spokesman Briggs Gamblin said.
Gamblin said Fairview Principal Don Stensrud will review basic security precautions with his staff.
The teen was released to his parents shortly after his arrest, Boulder police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said.
